A measuring device or instrument used to assess noise or sound levels by calculating sound pressure is the sound level meter. Noise meter or also known as noise dosimeter, is often referred to as a sound pressure level (SPL) meter, a decibel (dB) that uses a microphone to capture sound. The sound will be then evaluated within the noise level meter, and acoustic measurement values are unveiled on the display of the device. The decibel (dB) is the most familiar unit of acoustic measurement for sound, but there are some sound level meter devices that also determine the equivalent continuous sound level (Leq) and other acoustic parameters. The type or class of the device will dramatically define its accuracy as per wither American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) guidelines. Usually, “type” refers to the grade depending on the ANSI S1.4 standard, while class, on the other hand, is the grade according to the IEC 61672 standard. The Type 1 / class 1 or type 2 / class 2 are the two types of categories assigned to sound level meters. A type 2 / class 2 sound level meters usually suffice the assessment of noise in basic industrial, commercial, recreational or residential and educational applications. While if you are looking for precision-grade assessments that are sometimes made in laboratories, type / 1 class 1 sound level meter is the right one. For a sound level to measure the changes in air pressure produced by the sound source accurately, it will significantly need a microphone. For most applications, Class 1 is more than sufficient, unlike Class 2 microphone that is less accurate and less pricey.
